NaJuWriMo (National Just Write Month)

You know the feeling you get when someone tells you something you already know, but really don’t want to hear? And once they say it, you kind of want to smack them, but you can’t because you know they are right? Well, I digress.

Tac Anderson has coined November “NaJuWriMo” – or National Just Write Month for those of you who don’t speak in 140 characters or less. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write for at least 30 minutes per day – with NO exceptions.  It doesn’t matter what you write, where you write it or how well the words might (or might not) flow, but just commit to transforming your thoughts into words.

Although I willingly accepted Tac’s challenge, he wasn’t the only person who spurred me to write today.  I was also motivated by another blog post that got me in a tizzy.

In his recent post titled “If Your Team Hates Blogging, You Need a New TeamAdam Singer wrote about team members who hate blogging:

They don’t really hate blogging. They hate their job: and that’s a problem beyond the fact that you can’t get them to blog.

This is an assumption I whole-heartedly disagree with.  Unless you are a journalist or reporter, I can guarantee writing is only ONE element of your job. Furthermore, I can’t think of anyone I know who loves every task involved in their day-to-day work.

So to Tac – thank you for the challenge. I will become a better writer because of it and am excited to help promote NaJuWriMo.

And to Adam – thank you for the opportunity to prove you wrong. I can personally attest to the fact that liking one aspect of your job more than another is a far cry from “hating your job.”

Our Brain - Right hemisphere vs. Left hemisphere

Right hemisphere:
- present moment
- "being"
- thinks in pictures

Left hemisphere:
- thinks in language
- past & future
- has a to-do list and is "doing"

Which one is more prominent for you?
